Jaune Quick-to-See Smith at the Yellowstone Art Museum

(Billings, Montana) – In conjunction with a major exhibition of Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s art currently on view, the Yellowstone Art Museum announces a public presentation by the artist.  On Friday, June 23, 2017, from 6:30 to 7:30, the museum will host an informal conversation with Jaune Quick-to-See Smith and her colleague Lowery Stokes Sims.  The program will be moderated by YAM Executive Director Robyn G. Peterson.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith is one of the U.S.’s finest Indigenous talents.  Work representing four decades of her career is on view in Billings through July 16, 2017, in the exhibition Jaune Quick-to-See Smith: In the Footsteps of My Ancestors.  The exhibition examines recurring themes throughout Smith’s career, and it’s accompanied by a catalog with essays by Lowery Stokes Sims and Gail Tremblay.

Smith is an enrolled Salish, member of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Nation of Montana.  She has drawn throughout her life and career upon her Native heritage and merged it inventively and powerfully with modernist and contemporary modes of art-making.  Smith has an international reputation and a strong, clear body of work.  She has earned her leading standing among women artists and Native American artists while simultaneously aligning both of these often still marginalized groups more closely with the mainstream art world.  Lowery Stokes Sims is an independent museum curator and art historian with over 40 years of experience in the art world.  She has written about and presented with Quick-to-See Smith upon many occasions.

The YAM is privileged and proud to offer this public program, which will give the public an opportunity to meet one of Montana’s leading artists.  Admission is free to members or with general admission.  For more information, visit the museum’s website www.artmuseum.org.

Jaune Quick-to-See Smith:  In the Footsteps of My Ancestors is part of the Yellowstone Art Museum’s multi-year Montana Mastersexhibition series.  Both exhibition and catalog are supported in part by grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Elizabeth Firestone Graham Foundation, and numerous private sponsors.
