Bob Kuhn: Drawing on Instinct by Adam Duncan Harris

The work of wildlife artist Robert Kuhn [1920– 2007] is described as having the ability to take viewers into the “very midst of nature’s secret places, almost into the minds of the animals themselves.” The book Bob Kuhn: Drawing on Instinct, edited by Adam Duncan Harris, curator at the National Museum of Wildlife Art, presents a sampling of his rare sketches alongside the paintings for which he became well known. Observe Kuhn’s artistic process and learn about his life and American art from a series of essays included in the book. Through this insight, we gain a deeper appreciation for the beautiful images created over his lifetime.

Walnut Lamp by Dan Rieple

Walnut lends warmth to this finely crafted over-arched table lamp, while its Tiffany-style stained glass shade adds variegated color and elegance. Accented with patina bronze rods and set on a three point base, this piece would work equally well in the study or for bedside reading. Inspired equally by Mondrian, Mackintosh, Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau, Colorado-based artist Dan Rieple has been working with wood since age 14 and has the awards to show for it. But his fine craftmanship and original designs speak for themselves.

You Got MoJo Jewelry by Pyper Hugos

Pyper Hugos is intrigued by time- worn objects and always has been. As a kid, she remembers rummaging through junk yards to find forgotten gems and admiring items found in her aunt’s antiques store. She continues this treasure hunt today, looking for metal scraps that retain their original color to turn into reclaimed vintage jewelry. The Aida Ring is made from metal salvaged from an orange steel drum and is finished with a robin’s-egg blue accent from a ’55 Ford Fairlane, while the Margie Cuff wassalvaged from a ’79 Ford Bronco.

Short Branch Ranch Liquor Decanters by Craig Bergsgaard

In his new collection of Western-themed bar accessories, sculptor Craig Bergsgaard takes us back to when the West was ruled by wily characters. His Short Branch Ranch Liquor Decanters are cast in high-quality pewter and come complete with personality. There’s “Asa,” the no-nonsense boss who runs the ranch with stern discipline thanks to “Barzell,” the ranch enforcer. There’s also the strong-and-silent ranch hand, “Noble,” and ol’ “El Ojo Uno,” a smooth operator with “one eye” for the ladies and a knack for losing at cards. Liven up your waterin’ hole with the full cast of characters.

Vicomte Chandelier by Jonathon Browning

Jonathan Browning’s lighting line was developed out of necessity. With an extensive background in architecture and overseeing an interior design firm since 1991, he found it difficult to find quality lighting fixtures for his design projects. Now, the San Francisco-based interior designer designs and manufactures extraordinary lighting pieces such as the Vicomte Chandelier, cast from solid bronze. With frosted glass and available in five different finishes, the chandelier hangs in perfect balance between the industrial and classic aesthetic.

Literary Pursuits by Jim Covert

It’s no wonder that the judges at this past September’s Cody High Style show awarded the much-decorated furniture maker Jim Covert Best of Show for his entry Literary Pursuits. While the show was filled with beautifully designed and meticulously crafted furniture, Covert’s entry went a step further in creating an entire ensemble inspired by the love of reading. In addition to the desk, the artist built a lamp, bookstand, bookends and chair and prevailed on his wife, beadworker Lynda Covert, to not only create beadwork for the chair but to craft a beaded eyeglass case to complete the effect. Covert explained, “I didn’t just want to build a desk. I wanted to create a feeling.” In this he was successful: One artisan, upon viewing the piece, exclaimed, “I would love to own the room where that desk lives!” We love Covert’s reverence for tradition combined with his humorous nod to technology, exemplified by the inclusion of an e-reader, tucked away in the desk drawer.
