30 Apr From the Editor: Living in Nature
As spring gives way to summer, all we can think about here at WA&A is getting out into nature. This issue is filled with homes that not only embrace nature but call it into living spaces and flow seemingly without burden or barriers. Two homes in the California Hills blend graciously into their surroundings nearly blurring the lines between structure and nature. And a lovely Jackson, Wyoming, home creates unique spaces for a creative couple with very different needs — but most importantly, it allows them to downsize without tripping over each other.
I had the great pleasure of interviewing my dear friend Sue Simpson Gallagher about collecting art, and came away with so much more, as is always the case when we get together.
As for artists, I am thrilled to take you into the venerable Dan Ostermiller’s studio and give you a sneak peek at the work headed to Nedra Matteucci Gallery in Santa Fe for his 50 year retrospective. Our writer Johnny Boggs finally pinned down the elusive Jeremy Lipking for an interview on the occasion of his retrospective at the Booth Museum of Western Art. And we shine a lovely spotlight on more than 150 years of Indigenous photographers.
We have lots more fascinating news to tell you about, like how the CEO of the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City is rethinking museums as only a former Apple and Disney exec could. The auction market is making us all take a beat to analyze not only how art sales are faring, but also how collectors are feeling about spending money right now.
No matter what mood you’re in, we’ve got great places for you to visit, new artists for you to meet, and lots of fabulous art events to check out.
Best wishes for a happy summer!
